On 27 May 2025, the closing event of the Map-it CCU project took place in the historic St. Peter's Abbey in Ghent. The event was fully booked, confirming the great interest in Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS). The closing event attracted a broad and diverse audience: industrial players, technology experts, policymakers and academics.

Industry plays a crucial role in our economy, but also faces enormous climate challenges. As part of a broader approach, CCUS can contribute to making industry more sustainable, together with other strategies such as increasing efficiency, electrification and the use of renewable raw materials

However, the practical application of CCUS, from technology to infrastructure and the use of captured CO₂, is complex. Companies and policymakers have questions about the feasibility, business model and regulation of CCUS.

Map-it CCU: a decision model for the future
To address these challenges and answer the question “how do we test CCU technologies in an industrial context?”, the Map-it CCU project was launched by CAPTURE and VITO. Companies within Smart Delta Resources Flanders provided valuable input and feedback during the development of the project.

This project developed:

  • A knowledge matrix: collects, structures and disseminates knowledge about CCUS technologies and value chains;
  • A decision-making model: develops a decision-making framework that helps companies make informed choices about CO₂ capture, reuse and storage;
  • A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) that offers companies and experts free access to training courses on CCU technologies, with training and exercises for making strategic choices. More information will follow shortly via our partner CAPTURE.

Next steps: practical application and knowledge sharing

Knowledge about Map-it CCU continues to evolve, which is why the team will soon be launching new initiatives to support companies and disseminate knowledge.
- Conducting studies for specific SDR partners and formulating targeted advice on CO₂ capture.
- Applying the knowledge matrix to several value chains within the Ghent section of North Sea Port.

The mix of attendees confirmed the growing support for CCUS and the need for collaboration to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable industry. At the successful closing Map-it CCU meeting, practical experiences were shared, the technology selection model was presented and future plans were discussed. Importantly, this event marks not an end point, but rather a starting point for the further implementation of CCUS solutions.
